The Baggage Of Your Past 

In 1 Corinthians 6:11, Paul reminded the Corinthians about the past to encourage them in their present position and purpose in Christ, "And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God." 

Someone once said, My past beats within me like a second heart. 

The decisions you make now will form your future. In your future, your present will either be filled with past regrets or joyous memories. 

Let's study the Scriptures to find God's victory over our past regrets and move on to present victories!

I. Let's realize our past pulling away from Christ

A. Your past doesn't refuse you of a home in heaven. 

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

B. Your past actions shouldn't be what defines you now.  

II. Let's realize our present position in Christ. 

1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

A. We are washed.

B. We are sanctified.

C. We are justified.

III. Let's realize our predetermination for Christ. 

1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

A. I could do whatever I want.

B. Doing whatever I want isn't the best way.

C. I will not be brought under the power of any. 

IV. Let's realize our purpose through Christ. 

A. Our purpose is "for the Lord" not for sin. 

1 Corinthians 6:13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.

B. Our purpose is to "flee" sinful actions from the past, during our present and in the future. 

1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

C. Our purpose is to "glorify God in your body, and in your spirit which are God's." 

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

You can find victory over past regrets. You can choose to live your present in the opposite way of your past regrets. Your past should remind you of who you once were, but Christ will remind you of the rest and victory you have in Him since you came to HIM!
