We Are Part Of God’s Plan For Government
We Are Part Of God’s Plan For Government
Psalm 8:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
God created the government to be stewarded by God’s people. It has been said, We get the government we deserve.
We, as believers, have the power to shape history—through the tools God has given to us.
Note John Quincy Adams who said, “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.”
Keys to understanding our role in our government:
I. God promises national healing through “if my people…”:
2Ch 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
A. If my people humble themselves (humility is paramount)
B. If my people pray and seek my face
C. If my people turn from their wicked ways
II. God calls the church to reflect godly values. (This should encourage godly government at all levels.)
Mat 5:13-16 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
III. God calls us to pray for our governing authorities.
First Timothy 2:1-4 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
A. Sincere prayers vs 1
B. Grateful prayers vs 1
C. Expectant prayers vs 2
D. Accepted prayers vs 3
E. Soul prayers vs 4
Franklin D. Roosevelt encouraged people to pray as he pleaded, “I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let the words of prayer be on our lips.”
