TEENAGE SUMMER BAGGAGE #3:
The Baggage Of Secret Sins
In 2 Kings 17:9, the people of Israel have gone down in history with sinful baggage weighing them down, "And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God..."
Secret sins slow the soul’s peace, joy and prosperity. We cannot afford to let these secret sins live in our lives any longer. We can have rest from the effects of sin and victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
I. SECRET SINS AFTER BLESSED SITUATIONS
2 Kings 17:7-9
Just because we have been blessed to see or know the God of a miracle doesn't mean we will choose to stay faithful. We must purpose to remain pure even after the "high" times of the Christian life!
II. SECRET SINS MAY SLIDE INTO BLATANT SINS
2 Kings 17:10-12
If we choose to enter into deceitful secret sins and if those sins remain a source of pleasure, we will slide into blatant rebellion before God. We must understand the repercussions of living in blatant rebellion before God and repent of our wicked deeds.
III. SECRET SINS ARE SEARCHED OUT BY GOD
Psalm 44:20-21
If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
God searches out the decisions against Him. He doesn't do this because He doesn't know about our decisions...He does it so we are awakened to the reality of our rebellion. He desires to get our attention before it's too late for us. He wants to remind us of His mercy and His restoring grace.
Jeremiah 23:22-24
But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.
Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off?
Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord.
No one can hide from God. He's in every place. Preachers have an amazing opportunity to stand in the gap and warn people about their sin. Think about the revival that could have taken place if the preachers were faithful to preach against sin in Jeremiah's day. May God raise up many more young people who will be faithful to God's call of calling people back to the righteousness of Christ!
IV. SECRET SINS ARE PRESUMPTUOUS SINS
2 Samuel 12:9-13
Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.
Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.
Thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.
And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said unto David, The Lord also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
We are guilty of feeling that we can get away with something. We are also guilty of wanting God to judge others for the very same thing we are guilty of committing. Something is desperately wrong if we find ourselves in this situation. We need a "woe is me" mentality, and not a "destroy that person for the same thing I'm committing" mentality. Note how David begins to understand this and starts to pray for his own integrity over presumptuous sins.
Psalm 19:7-13
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.
The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins ; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
Conclusion:
Let God's Words speak to you concerning sin, life and handling sin. We don't have to live with sin reigning over us!
Psalm 90:8-12
Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.
For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.
The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
Romans 6:12-14
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
Proverbs 28:13
He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
May we allow the Word of God to prick our hearts over our secret sins that we may find spiritual rest and great victory over every secret sin we are committing in the sight of God.
